What We Do
Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association (ECWA) is restoring the most degraded stream in the Triangle to a clean, healthy creek that benefits people in urban Durham and anyone drinking Raleigh water downstream. We create nature preserves like the Beaver Marsh, 17-Acre Wood, Pearl Mill, and our newest preserve, The Rocks, near the North Pointe shopping area in Durham. Hundreds of volunteers dedicate thousand of hours to restoring these preserves and trashed parts of the creek. Our Creek SmartTM program helps businesses and homeowners prevent stormwater run-off from overwhelming the creek. Last year, we connected over 2,000 children, families, and other adults to nature through the Explorers Clubs and educational hikes. We even host a Beaver Queen Pageant!
“Thank God to ECWA for inspiring me and my neighbors to be more aware of how we impact our environment! Their hard work and guidance is making our neighborhood a better place for Ellerbe Creek!”
-Sandy Demeree, owner of a Creek Smart™ yard in downtown Durham
